The River in the Sky, 2022

The River in the Sky

Funded in part by RACC’s Make|Learn|Build grant, this installation explores the concept of Atmospheric River, a weather phenomenon that is immensely important in the distribution of water resources and is responsible for filling reservoirs and replenishing water supplies in many areas, particularly on the west coast. Atmospheric Rivers are streams of water vapor, usually beginning in the Tropics, that move through the sky and are released in the form of rain or snow weather.  Climate change is threatening the routes of these sky rivers, resulting in possible flooding and drought.

In River in the Sky, fiber artist Amanda Triplett renders an atmospheric river in recycled textiles. Inspired by the almost mythological and magical concept of a river in the sky, Triplett also references weather modeling in the bold, bright color choices used by meteorologists.
