Aldo Valdez, Untitled (Yellow Orange), acrylic on canvas, 60″ x 60″, 2012
Aldo Valdez’s work seeks to explore and reflect on the subtle nature of consciousness and the mind/body experience. His current body of work is inspired by an experiential process of meditation and self-awareness, often intensive, over many years and aims to reflect a universal character, an essential luminous quality permeating virtually all things.
His ongoing work consists mostly of large-scale painted canvases featuring a central shape that seems to float in a diffused color field. He achieves a blurred effect by layering hundreds of thin, translucent veils of acrylic paint and medium, creating a smooth surface that radiates a luminous, inner glow from the center. His pieces are contemplative, subtle, and serene. He also creates works on paper in various sizes, using faster, alternative mark-making techniques with dry media. These pieces are layered for a similar effect or created in a free-flowing, stream-of-consciousness style.
