Believe Me (1,2, & 3), vinyl and acrylic on wood panel, 36” x 24” each, 2021
This new body of work honors the survivors of sexual assault and addresses the systemic erasure of these narratives. As a survivor myself, I am inspired by the bravery of the “Me Too” movement and equally frustrated with the judicial and media response to discredit these stories. Each panel depicts an account of survival. Vinyl text is adhered onto layers of paint upon the wooden panel. Most of the words are then scraped off, leaving a blurry ghost of letters. What remains on the panel is an abstracted story, scarred by the efforts to wipe it out and the residual illegible words of trauma. A few chosen words were left to create a type of poem.
